I did twenty years of branding for the original Polaroid Corporation, the company that actually manufactured and sold instant cameras and analog film, employing 20,000 people. I called it product identity then and I call it that now. I created iconic devices for Polaroid and it's been remembered by people who appreciate some restraint and good taste in the marketplace. Fast forward to today and check out what I did for Dr. Florian Kaps and his Impossible Project. He sought me out from halfway across the world and asked me to do the same for him as I did for Polaroid from 1957 to 1983. 26 years later The Impossible Project introduced a complete line of cameras and film which he called the Paul Giambarba Edition. It's quite a tribute and I'm honored to be recognized. What I think is remarkable is that today, thanks to the digital age we live in, We were able to collaborate as if we were in adjoining offices, he in Vienna, the capital of Austria and I in my shop on Cape Cod, in Massachusetts. Once we had final copy, I was able to do twenty packages in twenty days, sending off Adobe® PDF files as email attachments. The printing was of exceptional high quality. The image above is from a CBS-TV segment on the demise of Polaroid taped on Valentines Day, 2008, at the Harvard Business School. When I was asked how long it took me to do these simple designs, I responded, "About ten times longer than fast and dirty." |
